October 27, 2008

Dear family, Great day...... p-day. Thursday for Jill and a new baby. Let us know. This last week has been okay. Monday family home evening for the single adults. A film, but it rained and no one came. Power went out . Tues. District meeting and Dad's Branch Pres. meeting. I spend my time reading a mystery. yah. Wed. up early and down to Asahama for a zone meeting. The four Elders crammed in the back seat of our car. It was good because the new Pres. only keeps us a half a day instead of all day like the last Pres. did. We had our chicken and rice box lunch and headed back home. It is always fun to take the boys as we start out with a subject of the gospel and everyone can have a say and then we pick another subject. It usually turns into a non-gospel subject but that's okay. ha ha. Talked with Jill P. this week and she says they are doing okay. She will be glad to have Thursday over as the doctor will start her. Kids are excited, aren't we all? How was your bread, little Jill D? I'm sure it turned out good. Thursday we went to Accra for three days. We stay at the ancillary and always visit the Area office for one thing or another. This time it was to see Dr. Stubbs, to ask about dad's cough he has been having. And to sis Bingham’s for her to take more pictures off of my camera that I took at the Handover Ceremony at Anteoa. The church had given the village there some supplies for a school (that hasn't been built yet) Some building tools, sewing machines, electrical supplies shovels, all sorts of tools and etc. Since HO Branch was the closes Church authorized Branch, we were assigned to go to their ceremony. It was as different as every thing else here. Anyway I took a lot of pictures and the area office keeps tract of all the things like that of the church. While at the area office we always have to take our computer and ask some questions. We settled in to our room and headed straight to the Distribution to get supplies for Branch and Elders that everyone had ask us to get. We hooked up with the Mattinsons and then Elder Shipley (Exec Sec to Pres. Snow of the Seventy ) ask us to go to lunch with him and his wife. Everyone likes fish but I don't say too much and just go along . It was a new restaurant for Mattinsons and us. We like to go to the different restaurants in Accra. Accra is so different than where we live modern things like the Mall and banks. People live the same and it’s still Dirty .cars, traffic is terrible one road and always busy and full of Africans selling there wares, it literally takes an hour to get from one end to another before you can turn around and go back the other way. It wastes a lot of time. Then Mattinsons and us just hung out at different places and then diner at Mama Mias pizza , but remember it's African style and leaves a lot to be desired. I was so tired and my stomach was kind of upset so I went to bed early. Dad tried to find a program on TV in our Suite (first time) usually 6 bunk beds. It was still small but had a double bed and a small fridge. I liked it best and will request it another time. Next day we went to Carvers, which is a place that makes and sells all sorts of wooden things. Then to lunch with eight others to the Sunshine restaurant. Temple with all of us Pres. and Sis Smith and the five miss. couples . It was great, the prayer circle was just the couples. The Temple is so beautiful, but aren't they all? Then we rested a minute and over to the mission home to Smith's for dinner. It was great fun. After dad and I went to Mattinsons room and had popcorn and pop and watched a Dvd, I fell asleep, I just can't do it. ha ha. Sat. morning over to Smiths again for breakfast cereal and toast and a super couples meeting with Pres. Smith giving us instructions for our areas and teaching us out of Preach My Gospel. It was spiritual and teary as Pres. Smith thanked us as couple’s missionaries out in the bush with very little conveniences and all we do. He bore a strong testimony and cried. It was great. Last week the Meeks who just came back week before that ( from Heber and know Jill P's dad and mother really well) had gone home to Utah to have a cancer cut out of his cheek and they came back, yep they wanted to finish their five months more on this mission. They had been to Nigeria on a mission before. Some people are just great. Anyway they were home and the Hills (Area Security and the Stubbs, Area Doctor and wife came to visit the Meeks at their house in Nsawam, up North of Accra, They had just left and got down to the main roadway, which I understand is a ways. the Meeks had gone back into their house after waving good-bye and saw a green mamba fall from the curtain into the hallway. wow.

Brother Meeks ran to the kitchen for his big machete and started swinging at it. The machete was curved and so he couldn't get it. So not thinking he got down on his knee and whacked in several places. It was about the size of a big thumb and 36 inches long. But is one of the most deadly snakes here. They called the Hills and the Stubbs and they came back and all took pictures to put on record and Dr.. Stubbs is using it in his presentation on Malaria and Snake bits etc. The thing is Dr. Stubbs said there is no anti-venom medicine in Ghana. It wouldn't help anyway, you would be dead. Fun thought huh? anyway they had plants and vines growing on their porch and the snakes like the trees and vines and had climbed up and through a small opening in the window and in to the house. Needless to say the Meeks cut all the plants away and filled all holes they could find in the house. Mattinson's have had a few scares also and they are jumpy. We are blessed to not have any yet, just seen a few dead ones. Oh that's Africa for you and it sure is great. Love you all and are so glad when we can hear something from you. We will fast on Nov. 2nd Stephenie let s hear from you all. Happy Halloween, I guess I'll wear my grandma costume. Love mom and dad
